Product Description

Flumequine is a synthetic, first-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic that was used to treat bacterial infections in livestock and poultry, but has since been withdrawn from human clinical use. It is effective against many Gram-negative bacteria by inhibiting DNA gyrase, which is crucial for bacterial DNA replication and transcription. While it has been used for urinary tract infections in animals, it is no longer marketed and was withdrawn due to concerns like severe ocular toxicity in humans.

What it is
Type: A synthetic, first-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic.Chemical Formula: \(C_{14}H_{12}FNO_{3}\).Active against: Primarily a wide range of Gram-negative bacteria, including E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Pasteurella, and Haemophilus.

How it works
Mechanism: Flumequine inhibits the bacterial enzyme DNA gyrase.Effect: This disrupts the supercoiling of bacterial DNA, which is essential for processes like transcription and replication, leading to bacterial cell death.

Past and current use
Veterinary: Previously used in poultry and livestock (cows, goats, sheep, pigs) to treat gastrointestinal infections like colibacillosis and enteritis.Human: Has been used for urinary tract infections (UTIs) in the past.Status: Withdrawn from human clinical use, partly due to severe ocular toxicity.
